Classroom Design

Ms. Kye's Preschool Class

I have based my classroom design on the fact that in my world I would have no more than twelve students at a time. If we were doing a large group activity then each student would have a seat at one of the student table and I could be at the kidney table instructing. I would be able to have a child or two come up to my table and work on giving them any extra support. As I conduct my morning large group activities we would meet on the carpet where the three beanbags and the projector is so that if I need to use the white board the space is suitable for all to see no matter where they chose to sit. Children in my class would be able to use the this area throughout the day to read, sing and dance as well as get an Ipad off the shelf to work on. In fact there would be an Ipad for each child and myself on the shelf closet to that area. Each child would have their name on their class Ipad and on their Ipad I would install educational apps such as "ABC Mouse" and "ABC Trace it" and other apps where I can track what they do and learn. During open center time the student would be able to choose any area within the room to work in small groups, with one peer or alone.
I chose not to incorporate a couch into my design because I learned the hard way that a couch sends two messages to this age group, one being jumping fun and the other nap time and I do not want to subconsciously promote either. Another thing I chose not to use in my classroom is a TV. I just feel that with all the other technology in the room a TV is useless. We can watch anything on the projector, computer or Ipads. Besides when I had a TV in my real classroom the children would always ask if they could watch "Bubble Guppies, Paw Patrol or Frozen" and when told we did not have those shows and movies and they could watch them at home, they became upset. But for whatever reason they never ask to watch those thing on the projector on white board.
I added a music supply storage cabinet because I love music and want the children to have access to many types of music during the year. In this cabinet there will be props such as ribbons and scarves for dancing, article clothing from different cultures as well as instruments for a variety of style. We can look up and play videos of different cultures dancing and playing their native music. I do this in my real class and the children are anxious to see what I will play each week.
